Podcast Boom: 2 Million Aussies Tune in Daily as Demand Grows for Fresh Content
A new survey has revealed that two million Australians now listen to podcasts daily, with growing interest in diverse genres and new shows. The PodPoll 2024 report, conducted by Deadset Studios in collaboration with market researchers Insightfully, offers a deep dive into the country’s evolving podcast habits.
According to Deadset Studios’ Director Kellie Riordan, podcasting is still expanding, despite its rapid growth over the past five years. “We haven’t hit ‘peak podcast’ yet,” Riordan states, pointing to the demand for more content, especially in under-represented categories. “With over 8 million Australians listening monthly, there’s room for more new voices.”
Spotify dominates as the leading podcast platform, with 58% of listeners favoring it. Surprisingly, YouTube has overtaken Apple Podcasts as the second most popular medium, with 30% of people consuming podcasts via video.
The report also shows that comedy continues to be the top genre, followed by news, current affairs, and true crime. Millennials and Gen Z lead the listener base, making up 60% of the audience, with the 25-34 age group being the most engaged.

Leanne White, Managing Director of Insightfully, adds, “We’re seeing new trends emerge, from platform preferences to genre shifts, all pointing to a robust future for podcasting in Australia.”
